If you are considering breeding your Golden retriever one of the first questions you should ask yourself is why. Here are some of the common reasons heard at vet clinics when things go bad.
I can make money doing this!
Breeding and doing it correctly is a very expensive undertaking. By the time you have picked out a good sire, waited for her to grow to the right age, then picked out the best male to meet with her, taking them through all of their health checks and veterinary checks, you have invested a great deal of time and money.
You will still have to pay stud fees you will have a lot of expenses during pregnancy and you will have a lot of time consumed taking care of the sire before she gives birth.
You also need a vet that is familiar with the welcoming process in order to do it correctly. You will need one that can perform a C-section if necessary. Surgery on dogs is extremely expensive, traumatic, and while usually successful it's not guaranteed.
When it comes to the new puppies that have been born you also have to make sure that they get their shots, and if one of them is born sick you will have to spend more money to make sure that the puppy is well enough to proceed with his life and potentially be sold. It is very unusual that a serious breeder makes a lot of money selling puppies.
You must also consider that someone looking to buy a golden retriever puppy especially a registered one is unlikely to buy it from a first-time amateur.
Breeders usually consider themselves lucky if they come out of the venture without losing money. Typically a breeder while serious is also a hobby breeder and is not looking to make money with the sort of venture. It is unlikely that you will make any money and if you consider your time you will definitely not make money.
My Kids Should See The Facts of Life!
The next reason a lot of people often quote is that my kids should see the birth of a new creature. This is the worst reason to have puppies. Things often go wrong when puppies are being born. Also puppies tend to be born when the house is calm and quiet which means it will happen in the middle of the night. Or happen when your kids are in school. In addition to that if this is something that you wish for your kids to see there are local 4-H clubs there are also shelters that would be happy to let you watch puppies being born and raised in socialized.
Every sire should have pups!
This is a ridiculous reason it's in no way necessary and that in it in no way affects her physical being. In fact there were studies that show a spayed female will be at less risk for cancer and other things than one that is capable of giving birth.
I want another dog that's the same as this one!
You are not going to get that. Unless you are able to genetically clone your existing dog and I don't think technology has come out far yet, you're not going to get exactly the same dog. Besides which Golden retrievers by and large have all of the same qualities anyway.
Goldey is registered!
Yes your dog may be registered and that's great but it takes more than a registered dog or a friendly dog to provide a good reason to breed.
The only real reason to be breeding dogs is if you feel or have been told by someone who knows that your dog should be bred to improve the breed. That's the only real good reason. There are lots of dogs that end up in shelters that will be euthanized because people believed it was a good idea but did not understand what they were getting themselves into.
