The Chesapeake Bay Retriever, also commonly referred to as Chessie, is a large breed dog originating from the Cheescake bay in America. It was bred to be a hunting dog, and does this job good regardless of current weather conditions. It is very independent and strong, and also very loyal. It is also very dominant, and not the easiest breed to train, so it is recommended only for the more experienced dog owners. This breed doesn't like to change its behaviour either, so trainers must have a good amount of patience at hand. An interesting aspect to this breed is that some Chesapeake Bay Retrievers tend to growl even when they are happy, and "smile" by baring their front teeth, something which people often mistake for more aggressive behaviour. It tends to recognize only one family member as its true owner, and considers everyone else either equal or subordinate.
The Chesapeake Bay Retriever makes a great watch dog, it is loyal and protective and will both bark loudly if strangers approach, and if within in range maybe even attack. It has no problems at all with older more considerate children and family members, and also has nothing against other family pets that it might have grown up together with. The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is also a great receiver, and will happily retrieve anything he's told to retrieve. They love the water as well, and have nothing against the cold in which they can spend many hours without being affected negatively. They love to run as well, and are both eager and energetic. They are however not very energetic at all when inside, but they always get a big boost of energy as soon as they step out the door. A daily dose of good exercise is recommended as well.
The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is built athletically. It is agile, sturdy, has high stamina and is both graceful and powerful. Their fur coat is thick and short, with an oily overcoat making him as good as waterproof. The average weight lies between 55 to 80 pounds and the average height between 21 to 26 inches. They have an average lifespan of 10 to 12 years, and some of the most common health issues include OCD, PRA, elbow dysplasia, HD and cataracts. It is also good to note that parents of a Chesapeake Bay Retriever puppy should have OFA and CERF certificates. One more thing good to know about this breed is that it chews a lot, and will most likely chew its way through many valuable household accessories if it's not given any toys of its own.
